Congratulations to CHEDDAR’s Professor Qammer H. Abbasi on receiving the 2026 IEEE Ulrich L. Rohde Humanitarian Technical Field Project Award!
3 Nov, 2026

Professor Qammer H. Abbasi from the University of Glasgow has been named a recipient of the 2026 IEEE Ulrich L. Rohde Humanitarian Technical Field Project Award for his innovative research into contactless healthcare technology.
Professor Abbasi, a core team member of the CHEDDAR Hub research team, has received the award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) for his project, Radar-Based Contactless Stethoscope for 6G-Enabled Healthcare: Community Deployment for People with Disabilities in Glasgow.
The award recognises engineering projects that apply technological innovation to address humanitarian challenges and deliver meaningful benefits to communities.
Advancing accessible healthcare through wireless sensing
Professor Abbasi’s project explores how radar-based sensing and future 6G connectivity could support more accessible and inclusive healthcare, particularly for people with disabilities.
Unlike conventional monitoring methods that require sensors to be attached to the body, the contactless stethoscope uses radar technology to detect subtle physiological movements without direct physical contact.
By combining wireless sensing with advanced signal processing, the technology has the potential to support less intrusive health monitoring, improve patient comfort and expand opportunities for healthcare delivery in community settings.
The project’s focus on community deployment in Glasgow demonstrates the importance of translating engineering research into practical solutions that respond to people’s everyday needs.
Connecting research with real-world impact
The award highlights the wider potential of research being advanced across the CHEDDAR Hub, where researchers are exploring how communications, sensing, computing and artificial intelligence can work together to create more intelligent, efficient and human-centred networks.
CHEDDAR has previously showcased the Radar-Based Contactless Stethoscope at Connected Britain 2026, demonstrating how advances in integrated sensing and communication could contribute to the development of future healthcare technologies.
Professor Abbasi’s recognition reinforces the importance of linking technological innovation to societal challenges, particularly where new approaches can make healthcare more accessible.
