Biography

Professor Muhammad Ali Imran, Fellow IEEE, Fellow IET, Fellow RSE and many other prestigious bodies (RSA, EAI, IAAI, HEA) is a globally recognized expert in wireless communication systems. He graduated from Imperial College London with MSc Distinction and PhD. He is the Dean of Graduate Studies and Transnational Education for College of Science and Engineering and leads a research hub of over 100 researchers in areas ranging from advanced wireless technologies to energy-efficient communications. Professor Imran’s research spans over 25 years, blending academic excellence with industrial applications, where he has been a key figure in multiple multi-million-pound funded projects. His work has resulted in 10+ filed patents, 600+ journal and conference publications, 2 authored books,10 edited books, and more than 30 book chapters.

As the head of the Communications, Sensing, and Imaging (CSI) research hub at the University of Glasgow, he is focused on future networked systems, including joint communications and sensing technologies, aiming to shift from a “sick-care” system to true healthcare through the integration of AI, ubiquitous processing, and a mesh of connected sensors that can intelligently collect, process, and actuate. He has held adjunct research professor positions at various leading institutions worldwide, such as the University of Oklahoma, Ajman University, and the University of Surrey.

Professor Imran’s research leadership and contribution success is highlighted by his role as Principal Investigator on numerous EPSRC-funded projects, including grants like EP/I000232/1, EP/J016632/1, EP/N020391/1, EP/P028764/1, EP/W006448/1, and EP/X038823/1, as well as his active involvement in 10 current EPSRC grants. Full list available here: https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewPerson.aspx?PersonId=-250015. He has also secured and contributed to several DSIT funded projects (5GNT, 5GRF, TUDOR, Comp-O-RAN, SCONDA, ONSIDE, BEACH, 5GDRIVE). His international collaborations include partnerships with academic and industrial partners across the globe.

He has won several international awards for teaching, research and leadership including the IET Achievement Medal for Wireless Communications and IEEE Fred Ellersick Award.

Professor Imran’s primary areas of focus include:

  1. Global connectivity through frugal solutions (components, devices and software/hardware systems) to connect the unconnected population.
  2. Energy-efficient and carbon-aware future technologies.
  3. Cost-efficient, open, and modular future telecom components, devices and systems.
