Celebrating a Trailblazer: Dr Mallikarjun Tatipamula, Elected Fellow of the Royal Society

CHEDDAR Hub, is thrilled to share and celebrate an extraordinary milestone in the distinguished career of Dr. Mallikarjun (Mallik) Tatipamula, at Ericsson, Sillicon Valley, USA, member of CHEDDAR Advisory Board and keynote speaker at our upcoming Friends of CHEDDAR and Industry Day on 15-16 July.

Dr Tatipamula has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), the World’s oldest and most prestigious scientific academy, founded in 1660. This is a rare and historic recognition that celebrates both technical and global leadership in science and innovation.
With this honour, Dr Tatipamula becomes the first person of Indian descent to be elected to all three of the UK’s premier academics: the Royal Society (FRS), the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). This remarkable achievement recognises not only scientific excellence but transformative impact across the global telecoms and technology landscape.

A 1988 graduate in Electronics and Communication Engineering from NIT Warangal, Dr Tatipamula has spent more than 35 years shaping the architecture of modern telecommunication networks. His visionary leadership has driven four generational shifts from enabling the mobile internet and scaling the global backbone, to architecting 5G for Industry 4.0 and now advancing global efforts for 6G networks.
His work on network slicing, control user plane operation and distributed cloud infrastructure has influenced industry-wide standards and innovation frameworks. At Ericsson Silicon Valley, he leads cross sector collaborations and public private innovation ecosystems in advancing 5G and 6G technologies.

Dr Tatipamula’s previous roles at Cisco, Juniper, F5 Networks, Motorola, and Nortel reflect a career dedicated to turning frontier technologies into real world solutions. A Distinguished Alumnus of NIT Warangal, he has earned his M. Tech from IIT Madras and Ph. D from the University of Tokyo.

As a mentor and teacher he has supported over 100 students and held academic positions including Distinguished Visiting Professor at IIT Hyderabad and Honorary (Visiting) Professor at the University Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow and Kings College London. Dr Tatipamula sits on numerous academic and industry advisory boards, including here at CHEDDAR where his insight continues to guide the Hub’s research and innovative agenda.
Beyond academia and industry, he contributes to public policy, advising organisations such as the Commonwealth Nations AI Steering Committee and working with startups such as Pensando, which was acquired by AMD for $1.9B!

With over 100 publications and patents, two books and more than 500 keynote addresses, his influence is both broad and deep. Dr Tatipamula has been recognised with numerous honours including the IEEE Distinguished Industry Leader Award, CTO of the Year by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and Technologist of the Year at the Total Telecom’s World Communication Awards. He also holds honorary doctorates from Concordia University, Carleton University and Middlesex University. From Warangal to Silicon Valley, Dr. Mallikarjun Tatipamula’s journey is a testament to excellence, vision and dedication. His election to the Royal Society is not only a personal triumph but a proud moment for the global research and innovation community including all of us at CHEDDAR.
